#ProudToBe

I guess you all have already seen #ProudToBe: Coming Together to Celebrate Identity video on YouTube. If you haven’t seen it yet, here it is

I’m not a homophobe, never was one and never will be. I just don’t care. I don’t care what people do with their genitalia. And why should I? Why should any of you?

But then I encountered this LGBT video on YouTube, and it made me kind of angry.

WE HAVE GAY SEX! LOOK WE HAVE GAY SEX!!!! WE CUT OUR PENISES OFF, WE TRANSFORM THEM INTO VAGINAS LOOOOK!!!!! WE ARE PROUD OF IT I’M A BIG MAN AND I’M PREGNANT!!!!! I’M A LESBIAN, SEE???? HEY, WANNA KNOW THAT I’M GAY?

Don’t get me wrong, it pisses me off not because they are gay or trans. I’m totally fine with their sexual and gender identity. What irritates me is the fact of showing it off. You know what? I just don’t like attention whores. If tomorrow I wake up in a parallel universe where being straight is not a norm, I’d just quietly continue having sex with my lovely boyfriend and wouldn’t exasperate people with annoying videos, I wouldn’t join heterosexual communities, wouldn’t attend meetings and straight pride parades. What for?

Why do they do this? What do you think about showing off your sexuality?

  1. “Pride” and “deserving” have become a closely associated and substantially devalued pair. “I am proud to have been born with green hair and I deserve respect.” Well actually the possession of the green hair gene is not an achievement in which you can take pride, and you have provided no evidence of deeds or attitudes which render you deserving of respect. In a civilised society you have the same default set of entitlements as everyone else. By all means assert them against barbaric deniers, but they give you nothing to be proud of (although they are something to be happy about), and you did not earn them. Advertising your sexuality or any other unearned characteristic is always asinine and frequently uncouth. Ditto asserting that you “deserve” something merely by virtue of existing.

  2. This reminds me of the recent bakery scandal where a buisness owner refused to bake a “Gay” wedding cake. Some of the comments hit me as true. Something along the lines of:

If a conservative does not like a TV show they dont watch it.
A progessive wants to ban it.
If a conservative does not like a political canidate they vote for someone else.
A progressive wants to the canidate banned from running.

On and on it goes. Great post!
